India will look to bounce back after the series draw against West Indies.
India will aim to address a few concerns when they face New Zealand (NZ vs IND) in the five-match T20I series starting on October 22 in Christchurch. The series follows India’s T20I contest against the West Indies, which ended 2-2, with the fifth match abandoned due to rain.
India showed their batting firepower during the series but struggled to maintain consistency across all departments. Their performances highlighted areas that need improvement before the upcoming challenge.
The opening combination and the contributions of pace-bowling all-rounders will be important for India. The team will also need its bowlers to execute their plans more effectively after conceding big totals in crucial matches against West Indies.
With limited preparation time before the opening T20I, India need to address these concerns quickly. Here are three things India need to fix ahead of the series against New Zealand.
Pace-bowling all-rounders need to step up
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
India will need good contributions from Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy in the upcoming series. Both players offer batting depth, but their ability to contribute with the ball will also be crucial to maintain the right balance in the playing XI.
Dube provides a powerful lower-order batting option while Reddy offers another seam-bowling choice. However, India need them to deliver more consistently with the ball rather than rely heavily on their specialist bowlers.
New Zealand conditions could prove beneficial for seamers. India will expect their all-rounders to make the most of these conditions, bowl reliable overs, and also continue to contribute with the bat.
If Dube and Reddy can deliver in both departments, they will give India greater flexibility in team combinations and bowling options.
India need consistency in the opening slot
Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma can provide explosive starts, but India need both openers to perform together more consistently. Their contrasting returns during the West Indies series highlighted the challenge of getting both batters to make a significant impact in the same innings.
Samson smashed 82 off 41 balls in the second T20I while Abhishek scored 20 off 12 deliveries. In the third match, Abhishek responded with 69 off 30 balls, but Samson managed only three runs.
Samson then scored 56 off 23 deliveries in the fourth T20I. Abhishek made 29 in the same match, but neither batter produced a match-defining innings as India fell short of the target.
India will need both openers to step up together against New Zealand. If the combination continues to lack consistency, the team management could consider giving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi an opportunity at the top of the order.
India’s bowling execution needs improvement
India’s bowling unit will need to improve its execution after an inconsistent series against West Indies. The second and fourth T20Is exposed concerns around the team’s ability to contain an aggressive batting lineup.
West Indies chased India’s target of 249/5 in the second T20I by reaching 252/4 in 18.3 overs. In the fourth match, the visitors posted 247/3, with captain Shai Hope scoring 102 off 50 balls.
India eventually lost the fourth match by 24 runs despite scoring 223 in response. The result highlighted the need for better control in the powerplay and middle overs as well as more disciplined execution at the death.
India will need their bowlers to be more consistent with their lengths and limit loose deliveries against New Zealand. Better execution under pressure will be crucial if they are to prevent the opposition from posting imposing totals.
India have enough batting depth and bowling options to compete strongly in the upcoming series. However, their pace-bowling all-rounders will need to contribute more consistently, and their opening pair must find a way to deliver together. Improved bowling execution will also be essential if India are to begin the series on a strong note.
