India vs Afghanistan T20I series gave plenty of answers to Indian team management for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024.

As India wrapped up their last T20 International series before the highly-anticipated ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA, the spotlight was on team dynamics and player performances. The series not only marked the return of veterans like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the T20I setup but also provided crucial insights for the selection committee in finalizing the squad for the mega event. Amidst the absence of key players due to injuries and workload management, the series acted as a litmus test for several aspirants. The series gave an indication and filtered out the names in contention.

Let’s dive into the five talking points from the India vs Afghanistan T20I series.

5. Yashasvi Jaiswal a clear first choice opener ahead of Shubman Gill

The opening slot debate gained clarity as Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased his skills, edging ahead of Shubman Gill. Despite being injured initially, Jaiswal seized his opportunity in the second T20I in Indore.

With Gill’s form across formats raising concerns, Jaiswal’s explosive T20I performances look to have secured his spot in the lineup for the upcoming World Cup, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

4. Sanju Samson dilemma and Jitesh Sharma’s emergence

Sanju Samson’s inconsistent journey in international cricket added another chapter of scrutiny in this series. Given a crucial opportunity in the third T20I of the India vs Afghanistan series in Bengaluru to make a statement, Samson disappointed once again, opting for an aggressive approach and lost his wicket on the very first ball.

On the other hand, Jitesh Sharma, known for his aggressive lower-order batting, made a case for himself as a viable option along with KL Rahul.

3. Shivam Dube a more than capable replacement for Hardik Pandya

Shivam Dube’s role as a potential substitute for the injury-prone Hardik Pandya took centre stage in this series. Dube not only passed the audition with flying colours but also emerged as a match-winner with two impactful performances. His all-round abilities and hard-hitting capabilities have now put him in contention for a spot in the playing XI, offering a valuable alternative in Pandya’s absence.

As India head to America, Dube’s consistency and form could play a crucial role in shaping the team’s strategy for the World Cup given the poor injury record of the newly-appointed Mumbai Indians skipper,

2. Spin bowling conundrum

The series witnessed a spin bowling dilemma with multiple contenders making strong cases for selection. Axar Patel’s economical performances, Washington Sundar’s consistency and Ravi Bishnoi’s promising displays added to the selectors’ headache.

Additionally, Kuldeep Yadav’s contribution on a batting-friendly pitch further complicates the decision-making process. With Ravindra Jadeja rested, the selectors face the challenge of determining the ideal spin bowling combination for the World Cup.

1. Pace bowling depth :

Despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and Mohammad Shami in the T20I series, India showcased the depth in their pace bowling reserves. Arshdeep Singh and Mukesh Kumar are the viable options in case of any unforeseen setbacks before the World Cup.

While the deadly trio is expected to lead the pace attack, the team management now has a reliable backup plan, ensuring flexibility in their fast bowling options for the World Cup.
