India's tour of West Indies 2023
Will Tilak Varma get elevated to India's World Cup 2023 squad? Rohit Sharma answers
Tilak Varma is top run-scorer of India in the ongoing T20I series against West Indies with 139 runs to his name.
The growth of Tilak Varma has been a magnificent story in Indian cricket. After multiple great seasons in the Indian Premier League, Varma got the chance to represent India on the international stage. Varma made his international debut for India in the T20I format against West Indies. Since then he has been on an impressive run with the bat. Varma with his magnificent performance in the T20I format, has put his case forward for a vacant place in the Indian ODI team at number 4. Former left-arm spinner Prgyan Ojha also suggested to carry Varma in the World Cup squad.
Now, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has come out and expressed his thoughts on Tilak Varma. Sharma in an interview with news agency PTI said, “He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing. In him I can see for the age that he is of, he is quite mature. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting, where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period.” Tilak Varma plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
Rohit talks about Tilak Varma’s selection
As Shreyas Iyer is injured, India are still deliberating to decide on the number 4 position in the playing XI. With Suryakumar Yadav not doing well in ODIs, and Sanju Samson inconsistent performances, Tilak has got an outside chance of making it into the WC 23 squad. Talking about his selection, Rohit said, “That is all that I have to say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India.”
Tilak Varma scored a half-century in the second T20I game at Providence stadium in Guyana. Tilak Varma is the T20I series leading run-scorer with 139 runs in three innings so far. He almost scored his second fifty in back-to-back innings, but Hardik Pandya’s winning six prevented him from his another fifty. India will take on West Indies in the final two T20I games at Central Broward Park Stadium in Lauderhill in the US on Saturday and Sunday.
