Shardul Thakur played a crucial role in helping India win the historic match at the Gabba.

Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur recently opened up on the “very horrible” treatment the Indian cricket team received by the Australians during the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21.

India and Australia played a memorable test series during the Covid era in December 2020-January 2021. The four-match series was made tougher for the Indian side as they kept losing players to injury throughout the series, but still managed to clinch it 2-1 after losing the first test.

The way they treated us was very horrible: Shardul Thakur

Recalling the memorable series, all-rounder Thakur revealed that Australia’s treatment of the Indian cricket team was displeasing. The 32-year-old revealed that there was no housekeeping service in the hotel in which the Indian side stayed.

“The way they treated us was very horrible. For four or five days, there would be no housekeeping service in the hotel. If you wanted to change the bedsheets, you would have to walk up five floors when you’re tired,” Thakur said while speaking at IISM Orientation Day 2024.

Tim Paine was lying and covering things: Thakur

Thakur further revealed a shocking thing about then-Australian captain Tim Paine. The Indian all-rounder said that Paine lied to the media about providing the best possible facilities to Team India. However, Thakur revealed that the captain Ajinkya Rahane and coach Ravi Shastri had to tussle with Cricket Australia to give the things they required.

It is to be noted that, ahead of the Brisbane test between the two nations, few reports emerged that India might boycott the match due to harsh treatment. But the visitors didn’t back out and displayed inspirational cricket on the field to win the Gabba test.

“I heard some interview from Tim Paine. That man was absolutely lying, he was just saving himself by making up things in the media, and covering up that ‘we didn’t put any pressure on Indian team and gave them whatever they wanted.’ But I know the truth. Virat (Kohli) had left – and Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Shastri were regularly fighting with Cricket Australia to give us what we wanted” Shardul added.
