ICC WTC final: Todd Murphy reveals the Ravi Ashwin delivery he wants to emulate
Todd Murphy wants to learn some bowling tricks from Ravichandran Ashwin.
Ravi Ashwin has probably been the best spinner in the longest format in the last decade or so. His numbers are just incredible when it comes to red-ball cricket, which is why he has been the leading spinner for the Indian team for the last 6-7 years. He showcased his skills in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ahead of the IPL and ended the series as the leading wicket-taker.
Not just Indians, even the opposition players believe that Ashwin is really hard to pick when it comes to test cricket. Australia's young off-spinner Todd Murphy is one of those who is in awe of the veteran Indian off-spinner and wants to bowl the "carrom ball" just like Ashwin used to do. The 22-year-old made his debut in the 2023 BGT series and was part of all four tests. He ended up as Australia's second-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in four games, with a best of 7/124.
Todd Murphy reveals how he watched Ravichandran Ashwin closely during BGT series in India
Murphy is part of the Australian Test team for the final of the World Test Championship. Although it is not sure whether he will get a chance or not. But the 22-year-old is confident of performing well if given the chance. He also said that he is learning the art of bowling the "carrom ball" and was impressed by the way Ashwin troubled batters with the delivery.
In an interview with cricket.com.au, Murphy said, "I am still working on that (carrom ball) but I am still a long way off being able to do it the way Ravi Ashwin can. It is simple in a way, and yet so difficult. It is just about being confident that you can execute it. I'd love to be able to add that myself one day. If you have a delivery that goes the other way it just poses different challenges for the batsmen." Furthermore, he talked about strengthening your basics right.
He said that he is trying to add another variation to his arsenal, but his focus is to stick with his stock ball and make it more useful. Notably, Murphy is analyzing Ashwin's hands position at the time of delivery by freezing the frame of his bowling clips. He said that it gives a great view of how he bowls and how the balls come out of hand. It will still be a big question whether he will get a game or more with Nathan Lyon in the side, but Murphy admitted the fact and said that he is preparing himself and is ready to perform whenever his chance comes.
