Tom Banton suffered an injury while warming up ahead of the start of the third day’s play during the Somerset vs Surrey game.

Cricket has seen many courageous stories, and one such incident was caught when Somerset and England batter Tom Banton came out to bat despite a leg injury. He limped onto the ground on Thursday (September 12) in the ongoing game of the County Championship Division One 2024 against Surrey in Taunton.

The game was heading in favour of Surrey as they took nine wickets of Somerset for 153. That’s where Banton showed a lot of bravery and came out to bat as his team needed him desperately.

Had Tom Banton not come to bat, Surrey would have gotten a comfortable target of 150 runs to win the game. But the 25-year-old, who is a middle-order batter, came out to bat at No. 11 with a runner.

Banton is in red-hot form and struck a brilliant century in the first innings. Unfortunately, ahead of the start of the third day (September 12), he suffered an injury while warming up and was seen on crutches. Later, the Somerset support staff confirmed his injury.

That is why he didn’t come out to bat at his usual position at No. 5. He came out to bat when his team was struggling and added an unbeaten 41-run stand with Jack Leach (13*). That helped Somerset end the day at 194/9 with a 190-run lead.

Tom Banton remained unbeaten on 28 off 28, with four glorious boundaries.

Somerset’s director of cricket, Andy Hurry, said, “Tom went over awkwardly playing football in the warm-up this morning and, as a consequence, couldn’t take the field. We will get him scanned tomorrow and will have more information by the end of play. His heroics in batting today show how passionate he is about the club.”

Banton’s act is similar to Nathan Lyon’s at Lord’s against England last year when he came out to bat with a torn calf and got an applause reception from the crowd. He added 15 runs for the last wicket, which helped the team win the game by 43 runs.
