Being the oldest nations to play this format, England and Australia have played the most number of matches so far. In this article, we will talk about the top ten teams who have won the most matches in the longest format of the game so far.
Here’s the list of top 10 teams with most wins in test cricket:
10. Zimbabwe – 15
Zimbabwe made their entry into this game in 1983 and played their first test match in 1992 against India in Harare. They don’t play regularly in this format. So far, they have played a total of 129 matches. Zimbabwe have registered wins in 15 games, lost 84 matches, and 30 games have ended in a draw.
9. Bangladesh – 25

Bangladesh became the 10th test playing nation in 2000. They made their debut in this format in the same year against India in Dhaka. This team has given tough competition to other big sides and registered some big wins in their history. Overall, Bangladesh have played 156 matches and have won 25, lost 112, and 19 ended in a draw.
8. Sri Lanka – 107
The team that holds the record for the highest test total (952) are at the eighth place. Sri Lanka were once considered one of the top sides in the longest format. But, as their top performers retired, they started struggling in this format. But despite that, Sri Lanka are very tough to beat at home. They have so far played 327 tests and have won 107 of them, with 127 losses and 93 draws.
7. New Zealand – 121
New Zealand are one of the top sides in this game, which is why they won the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship. Black Caps have a great record at home and have also done well overseas. They have played a total of 480 matches and have won 121 of them. They suffered defeats in 189 games, and 170 of their games have ended in a draw.
6. Pakistan – 152

Pakistan acquired test status from the ICC in 1952 and played their first match against India after partition. They lost their opening game, but won their next match. Pakistan are one of the top Asian sides in this format.
They have played a total of 467 matches in the format so far and have won 152 and lost 149 in total, including 166 drawn games.
5. West Indies – 185

The West Indies were the fourth team after Australia, England, and South Africa to play test cricket. The Caribbean team became a full member in 1926 and made their debut in test cricket in 1928 with their first test against England at the Lord’s.
Overall, the West Indies have played 589 matches, winning 185 and losing 221, one game ended in a tie and 182 in draws. There was a time when the West Indies were undefeated in the game, that was the time when they dominated world cricket.
4. India – 185

Team India became the first Asian team to get the test status in 1926. They played their first match of the format in June 1932 against England at the Lord’s. Indian team were the finalists of the first two WTC editions and are one of the best in the business. They have played a total of 598 tests, and won 185 games and lost 188, one game ended in a tie and 224 in draws.
3. South Africa – 191
South Africa were only the third team to play test cricket. They got test cricket status in 1909 and played their first test against England at St. George’s. Since then, they have become a regular team to play test matches. Their moment of glory came in 2025 when they won the third edition of the ICC World Test Championship.
Although South Africa suffered a 21-year ban between 1970 and 1991, despite that, they have won the third most tests. South Africa have played 479 tests, won 191, lost 162, and 126 games ended in draws.
2. England – 403

England are the ones that introduced this exciting game to the world. They are the oldest nation to play this game and have a rich history with it. They played the inaugural test in 1877 against Australia.
Over the years, England have seen many ups and downs. They have played 1090 matches, won 403, lost 331, and ended 356 games in a draw. England are the only team to play more than 1000 matches in this format of the game.
1. Australia – 423

Considering the numbers, Australia are the best team in the game of cricket across formats. They have been a dominant side that have found success in all parts of the world.
They have the best win percentage, and there is no team who has better numbers against them. Australia have won 423 matches out of 878 played so far, including 234 defeats, 2 ties, and 219 draws.
