Ravichandran Ashwin made his international debut in 2010.

December 18, 2024 marked the end of one of the most legendary careers of the game as Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket after 14 years in the service.

The Tamil Nadu-born off-spinner made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2010 and test debut in 2011. He quickly established his position in the Indian team in all three formats and went on to become a giant of the game, and one of India’s greatest match-winners in test cricket.

With Ashwin at the forefront, India cemented a historic legacy at home in test cricket by winning all home series from 2012 to October 2024.

It was no coincidence that when finally Ashwin had a poor series, India’s home dominance was crushed. That in itself reflects his match-winning-ability and India’s reliance on the champion cricketer at home.

Throughout his career, Ashwin attained heights even he couldn’t have dreamt of. In this article, let us see five of his biggest achievements.

Top 5 biggest achievements of Ravichandran Ashwin in international cricket:

1. No. 1 ranked test bowler and all-rounder

Ravichandran Ashwin claimed the No. 1 ranked ICC test bowler’s position six times in his career, the last one in March earlier this year. He had also attained the No. 1 test all-rounder ranking multiple times in his career.

2. Second most wickets for India in international cricket and in test cricket

Ashwin retired with 765 international wickets and 537 test wickets, and is second in both tallies among Indians, with Anil Kumble leading them with 953 and 619 wickets respectively.

3. Won ICC ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy

Two of Ashwin’s fondest memories as a white-ball cricketer would be winning the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013.

While he played only a couple of games in the 2011 World Cup, in which he picked up two wickets in the quarter-final against Australia, he played a key role in the 2013 Champions Trophy triumph, with eight wickets in the competition, including figures of 2/15 in the final against hosts England.

4. Joint most Man of the Series awards in test cricket

Ravichandran Ashwin bagged 11 Man of the Series awards in test cricket, the joint-most alongside Muttiah Muralitharan.

5. ICC accolades

In 2016, Ashwin was awarded the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year as well as the Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for the period of 14 September, 2015 to 20 September, 2016. He was also part of ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2023.
