Only three times 100 or more has been scored in the powerplay overs in IPL history.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest franchise tournament in the world. That is why every cricketer wants to play in the IPL at least once in his career. It attracts all the big names, which makes the cricket quality almost as good as international cricket. Over the years, there have been many big records registered in the IPL.
The IPL has seen several high scores posted by teams and to achieve a big total, teams need to start well and that’s where the powerplay comes in. The first six overs give the batters license to go after the bowling, and in some instances, teams get unbelievable scores in first six overs and set the stage for big totals. In this article, we will talk about top five highest scores posted in the powerplay overs in IPL history.

5. Delhi Capitals – 92/0 vs MI, 2024:
On April 27, 2024, Delhi Capitals (DC) hosted Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 44 of the 2024 edition of the tournament. After winning the toss, the visitors MI asked the hosts DC to bat first and DC turned the decision in their favour as they smashed 92 runs off first six overs. DC opener Jake Fraser-McGurk scored 78 off 24 deliveries inside the powerplay to help DC register the fifth-highest powerplay score in the IPL history.
5. Punjab Kings – 93/1 vs KKR, 2024:
In 42nd match of the IPL 2024, Punjab Kings (PBKS) visited the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). After winning the toss, PBKS asked the hosts to bat first and they accepted the challenge and posted their second highest IPL total – 261/6 in 20 overs.
During the chase, PBKS openers Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow gave a sensational start chasing 262. Prabhsimran smashed a 18-ball fifty while Bairstow raced off to 36 off 16 deliveries by end of the first powerplay. Unfortunately, on last ball of the powerplay, Prabhsimran got run out. PBKS ended the powerplay at 93/1, which is the fourth highest powerplay score in the IPL history.
3. Chennai Super Kings – 100/2 vs PBKS, 2014:
The highest score by a batter in powerplay was registered by Suresh Raina when he scored 87 off just 25 balls against Punjab Kings in 2014. In the Qualifier 2 clash of the IPL 2014, PBKS put a massive total of 226/6 in the first innings, courtesy of a century from Virender Sehwag (122 off 58). In reply, CSK smashed 100/2 in the first six overs but lost the way in the middle. CSK reached 202/7 and lost by 24 runs. This was the first time that a team scored 100 runs in the first six overs.
2. Kolkata Knight Riders – 105/0 vs RCB, 2017:
The second-highest powerplay score was registered by Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2017 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This was the record until 2024. RCB managed a below par score of 158/6 in the first innings. Chasing the score, Chris Lynn (50 off 22) and Sunil Narine (54 off 17) added 105 runs in the powerplay. KKR scored 159/4 in 15.1 overs and won the game.
1. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 125/0 vs DC, 2024:
Sunrisers Hyderabad broke KKR’s record of highest score in the powerplay and took it one step further. In a match against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2024, they scored 125 runs in the first six overs. Travis Head smashed a 16-ball fifty, and Abhishek Sharma scored 46 off 12. SRH posted a massive score of 266/7 and bowled DC out 199 to win the game later by 67 runs.
