Punjab Kings hold the record for highest successful run chase in IPL history.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest league in the world, and the quality and competitiveness here are unmatchable. Whether it is the highest total or chasing big totals, the IPL has some incredible records in the franchise’s cricket history. Here we will talk about the top five highest chases in IPL history.

A number of teams have chased down the 200-plus totals, but only thrice a target of 220 or more has been chased successfully in the history IPL and only once, a target of 250+ has been chased successfully in the history of the tournament. On that note, let’s take a look at the highest successful run-chases in the history of IPL.

5. Rajasthan Royals – 217/7 vs Deccan Chargers in 2008

Rajasthan Royals have three out of the top five highest run-chases in the IPL. The fifth highest successful chase came in the inaugural season in 2008, which was then the highest successful run-chase. It was the game between RR and Deccan Chargers in Hyderabad. The first innings saw some brilliant batting, and Deccan Chargers scored 214/5 courtesy of a brilliant century from Andrew Symonds (117* off 53). Chasing the target, RR got a flying start from Greame Smith (71 off 45) and Yusuf Pathan (61 off 28). RR reached 217/7 in 19.5 overs to win the game.

4. Mumbai Indians – 219/6 vs Chennai Super Kings in 2021

The highest successful run-chase for Mumbai Indians came in 2021 against Chennai Super Kings. Batting first, CSK made 218/4 with Faf du Plessis (50 off 28), Moeen Ali (58 off 36), and Ambati Rayudu (72* off 27) scoring half-centuries. Chasing the target, MI were at 84/3 in 11 overs at one stage, then came Kieron Pollard’s storm, who hit an unbeaten 87 off 34. MI scored 219/6 and won the game.

3. Rajasthan Royals – 224/8 vs Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024

Jos Buttler is one of the best overseas batters in the IPL, and he has played some amazing innings in the IPL. One of his best knocks came against KKR at the Eden Gardens in 2024. KKR scored a massive total of 223/6, with Sunil Narine scoring his maiden IPL century and making 109 off 56. RR were down and out and needed 96 off the last six overs. Buttler smashed a brilliant 107 not out from 60 balls and took KKR to 224/8 to script history.

2. Rajasthan Royals – 226/6 vs Kings XI Punjab in 2020

Rajasthan Royals held the record for highest successful run-chase in the IPL history, which came in 2020 against Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings now) in Sharjah, before PBKS broke it in 2024.

Punjab’s Mayank Agarwal scored 106 off 50 balls in the first innings and they made 223/2. Chasing the target of 224, RR got a flying start from captain Steve Smith (50 off 27). Sanju Samson (85 off 42) and Rahul Tewatia (53 off 31) slammed half-centuries, and RR made 226/6 in 19.3 overs to win the game. This game is mostly remembered for Tewatia’s finish after struggling to bat in first 10-12 deliveries he faced.

1. Punjab Kings – 262/2 vs Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024

The record for the highest successful run chase in the tournament history belongs to Punjab Kings. They did it against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in the IPL 2024. It was the 42nd game of the tournament, and KKR posted a massive total of 261/2 with major contributions from Phil Salt (75 off 37) and Sunil Narine (71 off 32).

But this massive score ended in a loss. PBKS reached 262/2 in 18.4 overs to win by 8 runs and 8 balls to spare. Jonny Bairstow slammed a stunning ton and made 108* off 48 balls. Prabhsimran Singh (54 off 20) and Shashank Singh (68* off 28) smashed blistering half-centuries in the game.
