Mumbai (Previously Bombay) won the inaugural season of the Ranji Trophy in 1934-35.

Ranji Trophy is one of the oldest first class tournaments in world cricket. It came into existence in 1934. The inaugural edition saw a total of 15 teams participate in the tournament, which now sees a total of 38 teams take part. This tournament is named after Ranjitsinhji, who was the first ever Indian player to play international cricket and played for England between 1896 and 1902.

Bombay (now Mumbai) won the inaugural season of the tournament. They also hold the record of, 15 consecutive season wins between 1958–59 and 1972–73. Six teams have won it once, while eight teams have won the title twice in the history of the tournament. Here we will talk about the teams with the most Ranji Trophy title wins.

5. Madhya Pradesh (Previously Holkar) – 5 :

Madhya Pradesh, formerly known as Holkar cricket team, have won the joint-fourth most Ranji Trophy titles. They made their debut in 1941. So far, MP have won five titles in history. Their home ground is the Holkar Stadium. They won the first Ranji title in 1945–46, defeating Baroda in the finals. After that, MP also won in 1947-48, 1950-51, 1951-53, and 2021-22.

4. Baroda – 5 :

Baroda cricket team represent the city of Vadodara in Gujarat and play their home matches at Moti Bagh Stadium. They are the joint-fourth successful team in the history of Ranji Trophy. Baroda made their first class debut in 1937. They won their maiden Ranji title in 1942–43. Baroda went on to win in 1945–47, 1949–50, 1957–58, and 2000–2001.

3. Delhi – 7 :

Delhi cricket team represent the nations capital city and are run by Delhi and District Cricket Association. They plays their home matches at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. They made their first-class debut in 1934. From Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi to Virat Kohli to Rishabh Pant, this team have given some big names to team India. Delhi won their maiden Ranji title in 1978–79. Their most recent win came in the 2007–08 edition. Overall, Delhi have won seven Ranji Trophy titles and finished eight times as runners-up.

2. Karnataka – 8 :

Karnataka cricket team, formerly known as the Mysore cricket team, play their home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. They have been part of Ranji Trophy competition since the inaugural season. Karnataka had to wait until the 1973–74 edition to win their maiden title, but after that, they won 8 titles overall. Their last win came in 2014–15. Some big names like Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Rahul Dravid, KL Rahul, and many more have played for this team.

Mumbai cricket team are the most successful first-class team in Indian domestic cricket across different competitions. They have won Ranji Trophy title a total of 42 times, while the second-best are at just 8. They were formerly known as Bombay and won the inaugural Ranji season. Mumbai won seven out of the first 20 Ranji seasons. But their real dominance came between the 1950s and 1970s, when they won 20 out of 22 titles in Ranji Trophy. Mumbai’s most recent title win came in 2023-24.
