Chris Gayle and Ravindra Jadeja hold the record for most run scored in an over in the IPL.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the world’s most popular cricket leagues, renowned for its high-scoring contests and nail-biting finishes. Over the years, we’ve seen some fantastic batting performances, but there have also been times when bowlers have been subjected to some savage hitting.

Batters who were enjoying a good day in that specific IPL match got stuck into a bowler. Sometimes the savagery with the bat occurs in just one over, and now we look at the five hitters who have scored the most runs in a single over of an IPL match in history.

Here are the Top 5 batsmen to hit the most runs in an over in the IPL:

5. Suresh Raina – 32 runs vs Parvinder Awana, CSK vs KXIP, IPL 2014:

This match was the Qualifier 2 match of the IPL 2014 season which saw Kings XI Punjab taking on Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MS Dhoni of CSK won the toss and chose to bowl first. The decision backfired as Virender Sehwag hammered 122 in 58 balls with 8 sixes and 12 fours and powered KXIP to 226/6 in 20 overs.

Then CSK lost openers Dwayne Smith and Faf du Plessis for almost no score on the board, enter Suresh Raina. Raina came in like a batter possessed and hammered 87 in just 25 balls with 12 fours and 6 sixes to his name before his innings came to an end via a runout. But during his knock, he singled out Parwinder Awana of KXIP for 32 runs in an over. He hit him for 5 fours, one off a no-ball, and 2 sixes in the over, taking him for 32 runs and 33 runs in all.

4. Romario Shepherd – 32 runs vs Anrich Nortje, MI vs DC, IPL 2024:

Romario Shepherd propelled Mumbai Indians to a very good total in the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals which was played in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on April 7, 2024. DC captain Rishabh Pant had won the toss and chosen to bowl first. MI openers Rohit Sharma (49) and Ishan Kishan (42) added 80 runs together in the first 7 overs.

But the finish came courtesy of Tim David (45* in 21 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes) and Romario Shepherd. Shepherd, in particular, took a liking to Anrich Nortje and in the 20th over of the MI innings, hammered 32 runs on his own off his bowling. Shepherd hit 4 sixes and 2 fours off Nortje and finished on 39* in 10 balls with a strike rate of 390.

3. Pat Cummins – 34 runs vs Daniel Sams, KKR vs MI, IPL 2022:

Pat Cummins, more known for his skills as a top-class fast bowler, and for being a world champion in tests and ODIs, showcased his batting skills as well in an IPL 2022 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians. This match was played in Pune on April 6. MI had batted first and posted 161/4 in 20 overs.

KKR at one point of time needed 42 runs in the last 7 overs but had lost Andre Russell in the chase. Enter Pat Cummins, who began by smoking Tymal Mills for a six and a four in the 14th over. He then did the same to Jasprit Bumrah the next over. However, the assault of a lifetime came in the 16th over bowled by Daniel Sams.

Cummins hammered him for 3 sixes and 2 fours and took a double on a no-ball for a total of 34 runs off the bat, while Sams gave 35 runs in the over. Cummins finished on 56* in 15 balls and held the record for the fastest fifty for some time in just 14 balls.

2. Ravindra Jadeja – 36 runs vs Harshal Patel, CSK vs RCB, IPL 2021:

This assault by Ravindra Jadeja on Harshal Patel came in the 19th  match of the IPL 2021 which was played in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. MS Dhoni had won the toss and chose to bat first on a batting beauty of a wicket. CSK were set for a decent total at 154/4 after 19 overs and had Ravindra Jadeja at the crease on 26* in 21 balls.

However, in the 20th over, Ravindra Jadeja hit Harshal for four sixes off the first four balls, with one coming off a no-ball. He then took a double and then again hammered Patel for a six and a four taking 36 runs off the bat, while the RCB bowler went for 37 runs in the final over. CSK finished on 191/4 thanks to Jadeja’s assault.

1. Chris Gayle – 36 runs vs Prasanth Parameswaran, RCB vs KTK, IPL 2011:

This match was played in Bengaluru between Royal Challengers Bangalode (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. The KTK team batted first after winning the toss and put on 125/9 in 20 overs. In response, RCB openers Chris Gayle and T Dilshan hammered the KTK bowlers in powerplay overs. Dilshan started the assault by hammering Ramesh Powar for 20 runs in the second over itself.

But the worst was yet to come as Chris Gayle got hold of young Prasanth Parameswaran and hammered him for 37 runs in total. Out of this, Gayle hit him for 4 sixes, one of which came off a no-ball and two boundaries. Gayle took Parameswaran for 36 runs in that over off his bat and made 44 runs in just 16 balls, and in the end, RCB won by 9 wickets with 41 balls to spare.
