India took 18.2 overs to chase the target of 111 runs against the USA in New York.

The Rohit Sharma-led Team India became the third team to reach the Super 8 round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after they recorded their third win of the group-stage. Having defeated Ireland and Pakistan, the Men In Blue thumped the USA by seven wickets in New York.

However, India were made to sweat in their chase of 111, which is now the highest target successfully chased down by any team at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York.

Once again the pitch at this venue proved to be extremely challenging for the batters and assisted the pacers heavily.

India restricted the hosts to 110/8, with Arshdeep Singh returning with jaw-dropping figures of 4/9 – the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in T20 World Cup history. Hardik Pandya continued on his impressive bowling form to pick two wickets and give away only 14 runs and also bowl a maiden in his four-over spell in the match.

In the chase, India were pushed on the backfoot early on by the India-born left-arm seamer Saurabh Netravalkar, who dismissed Virat Kohli for a golden duck in the first over and Rohit Sharma for three runs in his second over. India were 10/2.

Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the chase for a while with their partnership of 29 (32) before Ali Khan breached through the defences of Pant.

There might have been jitters among the Indian fans for a while as even Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube couldn’t get going early on. After being given a reprieve by Netravalkar, who dropped a difficult catch of Suryakumar, the India number 4 collected a few boundaries to calm the nerves among the Indian fans.

Yadav then unfurled his range of strokes in the last few overs to seal the chase. He raised his half-century in 49 balls, during which he showed his temperament for dealing with a tough pitch.

Fans hailed the USA team for giving India a solid fight.
