Hosts Sri Lanka won the SL vs IND three-match ODI series by 2-0 after being whitewashed in the T20I series.
Team India suffered a proper annihilation in the last match of the SL vs IND series on Wednesday, August 7, as they went down by a huge margin of 110 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The first SL vs IND ODI of this series was tied and India lost the second ODI. A defeat in the third ODI meant that India lost their first bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka since 1997.
The entire series followed a similar pattern. Charith Asalanka, the Sri Lankan skipper, won all three tosses and elected to bat first. In all three games, the hosts posted totals that were reminiscent of the 1990s era – Sri Lanka’s scores in this series were 230, 240 and 248.
In all three games, India captain Rohit Sharma gave his side blazing starts but the middle-order collapsed and succumbed to the trickery of Sri Lanka’s spinners.
Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Jeffrey Vandersay and even part-time Asalanka were too hot to handle for the Indian batters on the Colombo pitch that offered turn, grip and low bounce.
In the third SL vs IND ODI, Sri Lanka posted 248/7. The innings was held by Avishka Fernando’s 96 and Kusal Mendis’ 59 and they received support from Pathum Nissanka, who scored 45, and Kamindu Mendis, who scored 23 towards the end of the innings.
In the chase, Sharma hammered 35 runs off 20 balls but none of the other batters looked as comfortable as the Indian skipper. India fell from 53/1 to 101/8. Washington Sundar cracked some boundaries in his knock of 30 runs but it was always going to go in vain. Wellalage returned with brilliant figures of 5/27.
After India lost the final ODI and the series, fans fumed on social media and slammed the side for not being able to play Sri Lankan spinners in the series.
