After losing to India, Australia would be hoping for Bangladesh to defeat Afghanistan, but not by a big margin.

Team India stormed into the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with their victory over Australia in their last Super 8 match. Riding on Rohit Sharma’s 92, India thumped Australia by 24 runs at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia.

India and South Africa are the only teams in the tournament who are still undefeated. India finish Group 1 at the top with three wins in as many games. They will face Jos Buttler-led England in the semi-final on June 27 in Guyana.

This loss for Australia meant that their fate is now even more out of their hands than it had been earlier. They would now be praying that Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh, but not by a big margin. Both Australia and Afghanistan have two points each with Rashid Khan-led side yet to play Bangladesh. Even a wash-out would take Afghanistan to the semi-finals.

At the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent, where they defeated Australia a couple of days ago, Afghanistan will back themselves to defeat Bangladesh also.

Coming to the IND vs AUS match, Rohit Sharma recorded his highest score in T20 World Cup. The India captain blasted eight sixes in his sizzling knock of 92 runs off 41 balls. Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya all chipped in with crucial contributions to take India’s total to 205.

In the chase, although Australia lost David Warner in the first over, Travis Head hammered the Indian bowlers for 76 runs in 43 balls. But the left-hander didn’t get sustained support from the other end. Once Head and Marsh’s partnership was broken, Indian bowlers pounced on the Aussies, eventually sealing the match by 24 runs.

Fans on Twitter celebrated India’s victory over Australia in the Super 8 round and their qualification to the semi-finals:
