Jeffrey Vandersay was drafted into the side after Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out due to hamstring injury.
Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay spun a web around the Indian batters in the 2nd SL vs IND ODI on Sunday in Colombo, helping Sri Lanka win the match by 32 runs and take a lead of 1-0 in the three-match ODI series.
Charith Aslanka, the Sri Lankan captain, won the toss and elected to bat first and his side posted 240/9 on the board. Although none of the Lankan batters reached a half-century, as many as four of them scored 30 or more, which allowed them to reach a total of 240. Avishka Fernando and Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 40 each.
India got off to a rapid start with captain Rohit Sharma smashing five fours and four sixes in his thunderous knock of 64 runs off 44 balls, while Shubman Gill scored 35 runs off 44 balls.
However, once India’s 97-run opening stand was broken, the Lankan bowled capitalised and brought the downfall of the famed Indian batting line-up.
Jeffrey Vandersay took the first six Indian wickets to fall – Rohit, Gill, Kohli, Shivam Dube, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer.
Axar Patel showed a fight with the bat, scoring 44 runs off 44 balls to keep India alive. He was removed by Asalanka, who also dismissed Washington Sundar and Mohammed Siraj. Arshdeep Singh was the last wicket to fall in the form of a run out as India were bundled for 208.
Vandersay’s spell, which included wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, gave the Indian fans a flashback of Ajantha Mendis’ six-for from the 2010 Asia Cup final.
Here is how fans on Twitter reacted to Jeffrey Vandersay’s match-winning bowling effort and Sri Lanka’s victory in the 2nd SL vs IND ODI:
