RCB defeated DC in the WPL 2024 final by 8 wickets.

The final of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 was played on March 17, 2024, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The final saw home team Delhi Capitals (DC) led by Meg Lanning taking on Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Meg Lanning won the toss and chose to bat first on her home ground in Arun Jaitley Stadium. Shafali Verma and Lanning gave DC a solid start, adding 64 runs in 7.1 overs for the first wicket. Shafali looked in good touch, scoring 44 in just 27 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes to her name.

On the other hand, Lanning made 23 with 3 fours. However, Smriti Mandhana employed her spinners to good effect as Shreyanka Patil, Asha Shobana and Sophie Molineux rattled the Delhi Capitals’ middle order. Molineux dismissed Verma (44), Jemimah Rodrigues (0), and Alice Capsey (0) in four balls in the same over to start the downfall.

Shreyanka then took the wicket of Lanning and added three more scalps of Minnu Mani (5), Arundhati Reddy, and Taniya Bhatia. Asha Shobana accounted for wickets of Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen as DC only posted 113 on the board in 18.3 overs. Shreyanka Patil shined with 4/12, while Molineux took 3/20 and Shobana took two wickets.

Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine and Ellyse Perry star for Royal Challengers Bangalore

Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine opened the innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore Women. The duo played cautiously in the chase as Meg Lanning started building pressure on the opposition. Devine scored 32 with 5 fours and 1 six in 27 balls and added 49 runs in 8.1 overs for the opening wicket.

Smriti Mandhana went into a shell in the chase and managed 31 runs in 39 balls with 3 fours only. She had added 33 runs for the second wicket with Ellyse Perry. But Mandhana fell to Minnu Mani as RCB were in a tense situation at 82/2, needing 32 runs in 30 balls.

However, the experienced Ellyse Perry took RCB home without any further damages as she remained unbeaten on 35 runs, while Richa Ghosh made 17* and hit the winning runs as RCB won by 8 wickets and became the WPL 2024 champions.

The Twitterverse including cricket experts and fans were ecstatic as RCB finally won a T20 trophy albeit this time it was the RCB Women’s team led by Smriti Mandhana.
