Sanju Samson scored 107 runs off 50 balls in Durban.

On Saturday, wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson became the first-ever Indian batsman to hit T20I centuries in two consecutive matches.

Carrying on from his 111 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad a little less than a month ago, Samson, opening once again, cracked 107 runs off only 50 balls in the 1st IND vs SA T20I at Kingsmead in Durban. By the time Samson got out, India’s score had raced to 175 in 15.4 overs.

Samson’s majestic knock against the Proteas included seven stylish fours and 10 towering sixes, each carrying his grace and elegance.

There was no let of for the hosts’ bowlers from the Kerala batsman. He smashed 35 (20) in the powerplay and reached his fifty with two consecutive sixes to Nqabayomzi Peter off 27 balls. His next fifty was even quicker: Samson reached his century off 47 balls, taking only 20 deliveries to go from half-century to century.

Before Samson, only three batsmen in the history of T20I cricket had hit two centuries in consecutive matches. They are Gustav McKeon, Phil Salt and Rilee Rossouw. With this ton in the 1st IND vs SA T20I, Samson joins a small group of people.

While there is still no guarantee that Samson would retain his spot at the top of the order once India are at their full strength, that is when Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill return, the Kerala batsman has done his reputation a world of good with these two knocks, especially with the latest one against South Africa away from home.

Fans on Twitter hailed Sanju Samson for his 2nd T20I century during 1st IND vs SA T20I:
