Trent Boult has picked most wickets in the first over of IPL matches.
Trent Boult was the starter of the demolition job for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in their recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 31, 2025.
KKR were asked to bat first after MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss, and Trent Boult started the program from the first over itself. He bowled a beautiful outswinger to Sunil Narine, with the ball curving into the batter before swinging out and crashing into the stumps.
This left KKR rattled, and then Deepak Chahar dismissed Quinton De Kock in the next over. MI debutant Ashwani Kumar then rocked into action as he started off his IPL debut with a wicket off the first ball of his IPL career, having Ajinkya Rahane caught by Tilak Varma.
He went on to complete his three overs with figures of 4/24. His wickets included Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell, making him the first Indian bowler to take four wickets on IPL debut.
KKR were bowled out for 116 runs. In the chase, Ryan Rickelton made 62*, and Suryakumar Yadav made 27* in 9 balls as MI chased the total in 12.5 overs and won the game by eight wickets.
Trent Boult becomes the bowler with the most wickets in IPL in the first over
Trent Boult gave MI a great start by dismissing Sunil Narine for a duck in the opening over. The KKR opener’s stumps were shaken by a superb in-swinger. Boult makes history by being the first player to capture 30 wickets in an IPL match’s opening over.
This puts Boult ahead of India pacer Bhuvneshwar, who has 27 wickets in the first over in IPL matches, as he now leads the record for most wickets in the first over with 30. Less than 20 wickets have been taken by the remaining members of the chasing pack.
Here are the bowlers with the most wickets in the first over of IPL matches:
30 – Trent Boult (96 matches)
27 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar (126 matches)
15 – Praveen Kumar (89 matches)
13 – Sandeep Sharma (78 matches)
13 – Deepak Chahar (77 matches)
During his time with the Rajasthan Royals, Boult struck in the opening over 19 times, while when playing for the Mumbai Indians, he took 11 of his 30 IPL first-over wickets.
The bowler with the second-highest number of wickets in the first six overs in IPL history is Trent Boult, who claimed 63 in the powerplay. Only Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who took 72 wickets in the powerplay, came before him.
