Virat Kohli top-scored in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa with 76 runs.

In the battle of, as social media had hyped up this match, the “perennial chokers vs the chokers of the decade,” India emerged victorious by only seven runs to seal the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy and end their decade-long ICC trophy drought.

At the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, India also became the first-ever team to win a men’s T20 World Cup title without losing a single game in the competition. India had come close to doing it last year twice, but both times lost the finals to Australia.

This time, though, two of India’s greatest players, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, stepped up in tight situations to keep the match alive.

Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya bowled five excellent overs when South Africa needed 30 runs in as many balls.

The match seemed gone for good for India when Heinrich Klaasen smoked Axar Patel for two sixes and two fours in a 24-run 15th over of South Africa’s innings. That brought the equation down from 54 runs needed off 36 balls to 30 in 30.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, won the toss and elected to bat first. Rohit and Kohli started the innings with five fours in the first eight balls but India lost Rohit, Pant and Suryakumar Yadav in the powerplay.

Kohli decided to return to his conservative approach and reached his half-century in 48 balls before smashing two sixes and two fours. He got out for 76 runs off 59 balls. Axar Patel (47 off 31) and Shivam Dube (27 off 16) made crucial contributions to India’s total of 177.

India started their defence with two early wickets. Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs posted a stand of 58 (38) before both departed. Klaasen put the game in South Africa’s reach with his 52 off 27 but the Indian pace trio pulled things back spectacularly in the last five overs to help the team clinch the trophy.

This is how fans on Twitter erupted in celebration as India win the ICC T20 World Cup 20234 trophy:
