The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is set to begin from March 28.
The highly awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is just around the corner, as all ten teams begin their preparation for the 19th edition of the IPL. After the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2026 which saw India defend their title, the IPL will provide players with another opportunity to showcase their skills in the shortest format.
The initial schedule for the IPL has been released. Only 20 matches have been announced so far due to the elections in some parts of the country. Starting on March 28, the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in RCB’s backyard.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will begin their campaign on Sunday, against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will face off against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on March 30 in Guwahati, while finalists from last year Punjab Kings (PBKS) will take on Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur on March 31.
The reason for the partial schedule release, is due to a direct clash with the elections taking place in several states during the period.
RR vs MI & RR vs RCB to get postponed in IPL 2026?

The election dates have finally been released, and uncertainty now looms over two of the 20 matches announced so far. According to the Election Commission of India, the West Bengal elections will be held from April 23-29, Assam elections on April 9, Tamil Nadu elections on April 23, Kerala elections on April 9 and Puducherry elections on April 9.
Out of these five states, three franchises—KKR, CSK and RR will be hosting home matches in their respective states. A clash with any of the assembly election dates could put those fixtures’ futures in jeopardy.
KKR will play three home games from April 2-9, and hence those games will go on as scheduled. Similarly, CSK’s home games are on April 3 and 11, well before TN’s election dates. However, the concern is around the Rajasthan Royals’ matches, slated to be held in Guwahati (Assam).
RR vs MI and RR vs RCB have been scheduled for April 7 and April 10 respectively. With the Assam elections to be held on April 9, this could be a major logistic issue. Crowd management, security and player convenience are top priorities.
With several personnel expected to be deployed for the elections, handling two major events simultaneously in the region will become a huge headache. While the MI-RR clash might still go on, the RCB match is unlikely to be held on the suggested date. BCCI is yet to comment on this potential situation.
