A five-wicket haul from Akeal Hosein bundled Uganda for only 39 runs.

The Uganda cricket team registered an unwanted record during their loss to the West Indies in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The WI vs UGA game was played at the Providence Stadium, Guyana, on Saturday night.

The hosts posted 173 runs on the board batting first and then bowled the opposition out for only 39 runs. This meant West Indies secured a victory by a huge margin of 134 runs, making it the second biggest victory in terms of runs in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Five of Uganda’s top seven batters were dismissed by left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, who returned with sensational figures of 5/11. Akeal’s 5/11 are the sixth-best bowling figures in T20 World Cup history and the best by a West Indies bowler in the competition, bettering Samuel Badree’s 4/15 against Bangladesh in the 2014 T20 World Cup.

Uganda make the joint-lowest total in T20 World Cup history

The team captained by Brian Masaba were knocked over for only 39 runs, which is the joint-lowest total in the history of the men’s T20 World Cup. They equalled the Netherlands’ total of 39 runs against Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup in Chattogram.

The Dutch also hold the second-lowest total record in the competition – 44, also against Sri Lanka in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Uganda’s opponent in Guyana, West Indies, are next on the list for their score of only 55 against England in Dubai in 2021. The Brian Masaba-led side had a rough initiation in this tournament as they were bowled out for 58 against Afghanistan a few days ago.

Lowest all-out totals in T20 WCs:39 – NED vs SL, Chattogram, 201439 – UGA vs WI, Providence, 2024*44 – NED vs SL, Sharjah, 202155 – WI vs ENG, Dubai, 202158 – UGA vs AFG, Guyana, 2024

They have two points in three games, earned from their win over Papua New Guinea. Their remaining group match is against New Zealand.
