Uganda will be playing their first ever ICC T20 World Cup tournament.
Uganda have named their squad for their historic maiden appearance at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on May 6, 2024. Brian Masaba will captain the side in their first appearance in an ICC event.
Uganda defeated Rwanda in the final round of matches in the Africa phase of the qualifications in November 2023. Uganda became the second team to qualify, following Namibia from the region. Uganda secured a top-two finish in the T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier after winning five of six games. Uganda won their first T20 international against a Full Member team, defeating Zimbabwe by five wickets.
Uganda have been placed in Group C along with the co-hosts West Indies, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan. Brian Masaba will be accompanied by vice-captain Riazat Ali Shah and the squad also has one of the most experienced players in Africa, in 43-year-old Frank Nsubuga, who will be one of the oldest players in the tournament.
Nsubuga was just 17 when he first played for Uganda back in the 1997 ICC trophy. He then made headlines across the world taking a sprawling catch approaching the boundary in a Cricket World Cup Challenge League match against Kenya in 2022.
Uganda also have spin-bowling all-rounder Alpesh Ramjani, who was nominated for 2023 ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year. Ramjani claimed the most T20I wickets in men’s cricket last year, 55 of them at an economy of under five an over.
Uganda to begin their T20 World Cup campaign on June 3 against Afghanistan in Guyana
Riazat Ali Shah and Dinesh Nakrani are two notable batsmen, while the team also has U19 World Cup experience with teenager Juma Miyaji, who competed in the 2022 tournament in the West Indies.
While this is Uganda’s first senior men’s World Cup appearance (ODI or T20I), the country has previously represented itself in a global tournament through the now-defunct East Africa side that competed in the 1975 Cricket World Cup. Samuel Walusimbi was the only Ugandan player in the squad, appearing in three games.
Uganda squad: Brian Masaba (c), Simon Ssesazi, Roger Mukasa, Cosmas Kyewuta, Dinesh Nakrani, Fred Achelam, Kenneth Waiswa, Alpesh Ramjani, Frank Nsubuga, Henry Ssenyondo, Bilal Hassun, Robinson Obuya, Riazat Ali Shah (vc), Juma Miyaji, Ronak Patel.
Traveling reserves: Innocent Mwebaze, Ronald Lutaaya
