Major update on Galle pitch & India’s playing XI for first SL vs IND Test

The Indian Cricket Team is all set to begin another important overseas Test assignment as the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka will underway in Galle on Saturday, August 15. With this being part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, both the games carry extra importance, and the visitors will be looking to start the series on a winning note.
India need to focus on their Test performances to get into the WTC Final as they are currently in fifth spot with PCT of 48.15. They have played quite impressive cricket in Sri Lanka over the years, winning majority of the series in Island, but every new series comes with fresh challenges.
The pitch at Galle, traditionally known for offering plenty of assistance to spinners, has often led teams to have their playing XI with more spin options. However, this time the conditions appear to be slightly different.
One day before the opening Test, a report from Galle suggested that the surface may not behave like the usual turning track. This has created a mystery around the pitch; both teams will be looking to strike a balance between pace and spin.

According to reports in TOI, the Galle pitch does not look like the dry, cracked surface usually seen at the venue. Instead, it appears to be a good batting wicket, with watering done even a day before the match. The expectation is that batting will be easier during the first two days before the surface gradually starts assisting the spinners later in the game.
The reports also claimed that India are likely to play two pacers and three spinners. Ravindra Jadeja is certain to play as India’s main all-rounder while Kuldeep Yadav is expected to lead the spin attack alongside him. Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace department.
Morne Morkel shares his take on Galle pitch ahead of first SL vs IND Test
India bowling coach Morne Morkel also shared a positive assessment of the wicket during their pre-match press conference.
“It looked like a good surface. And I think as the Test match goes on, something will start to happen. We’ve prepared basically for all that can come our way.”
Morkel believes the key for whichever team bats first will be to post a big total before the pitch begins to change.
“Traditionally, the first two days belong to the batting side. It’s just crucial to get runs on the board; if you bat first, make sure you go big.”
