Josh Hazlewood joined the RCB squad just before the IPL 2026.

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have received a big boost ahead of their first match in IPL 2026. Australian star pacer Josh Hazlewood has joined the squad.

A big update has come just one day before the opening game. RCB will kick off their campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Fans were thrilled to see the star pacer back with the team. The franchise shared a fun video of his arrival. It quickly went viral. His presence has lifted the mood in the dressing room. But there is still a big question. Will he play the first match or not?

There is now a major update on Hazlewood’s availability. RCB head coach Andy Flower has confirmed that the star pacer will sit out the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Notably, Hazlewood is still recovering from hamstring and Achilles injuries. The team management does not want to rush him. Especially when it is so early in the tournament. The management wants him to be at his best before he takes the field. This means that he will miss the first few matches of IPL 2026.

This is a setback for RCB. Hazlewood is one of their main bowlers. He brings control and experience in powerplay and death overs. Without him, the bowling attack looks less strong.

RCB will now look at backup options. New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy is likely to get a chance. He can provide a similar role with the new ball. The team may also depend more on their Indian bowlers.

The situation becomes tougher as Yash Dayal is not available due to off-field issues. On the other hand, Nuwan Thushara is also not with the team, as he failed to clear the fitness test conducted by SLC.

Even then, Hazlewood’s presence in the camp is important. He is training with the team and supporting the players. His return later in the tournament could be a big boost. RCB will hope to manage the early phase well until their star pacer is fully ready.

Who can replace Hazlewood in the playing XI vs SRH?

Jacob Duffy might replace Josh Hazlewood.

When can Hazlewood return to the RCB team?

He may return after gaining full fitness in the mid-phase of the tournament.
