IND vs WI: Major update on Rinku Singh's participation in T20 World Cup 2026

Rinku Singh returned home after the demise of his father.
India’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign suffered a massive blow when they lost to South Africa in their opening Super 8 match, a re-match of last season’s final. However, the defending champions managed to bounce back quickly in Chennai with a huge victory against Zimbabwe, setting up a direct knockout match against West Indies on Sunday in Kolkata.
However, amidst the race for qualification to the semi-finals, a personal tragedy hit one of India‘s middle-order mainstays – Rinku Singh.
Rinku Singh came into his maiden T20 World Cup shouldering the responsibility of India’s death over batting. But his own poor form meant very less contribution from him, and it eventually led to the management dropping Rinku from the team, and playing all three of Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma at the top.

Prior to the Zimbabwe match, Rinku Singh returned home to visit his father, who was reported to be in a critical condition. However, he re-joined the team on the eve of the super 8 match, despite being dropped.
On February 27 though, the tragic news of Rinku Singh’s father passing away came out. The KKR batter rushed home, in Aligarh, to be with his family in this time of grief and complete his father’s final rites.
The Indian cricketing fraternity mourned the loss of Rinku’s father, who made a lot of sacrifices to enable his son to pursue his dreams despite coming from a lower middle-class family.
In a major update by BCCI secretary, Rinku Singh will join the Indian team in Kolkata on Saturday, ahead of their knockout match against West Indies.
“Rinku Singh will join the team tomorrow in Kolkata,” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia told ANI.
This underlines Rinku’s commitment towards his country even in a emotional and sad moment for him and his family.
