Urvil Patel didn’t find any buyers at the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Urvil Patel would have been disappointed at not being picked at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. But, he brushed that disappointment aside and two days after the auction, he smashed the fastest T20 century by an Indian batsman and second-fastest by anyone in the world in the shortest format.

Born in Baroda, Urvil Patel, a wicket-keeper and opener, plays domestic cricket for Gujarat. On Wednesday, against Tripura in their clash in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy (SMAT) tournament, the right-hander blasted seven fours and 12 sixes in his knock of 113 runs off 35 balls.

En route this, he reached his century in only 28 balls, the fastest by any Indian batsman in T20 format, breaking the record of Rishabh Pant, who had hit a 32-ball hundred during the 2018 SMAT against Himachal Pradesh while playing for Delhi.

The record for the fastest T20 hundred belongs to Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who cracked a 27-ball century against Cyprus in 2024. That match also had international status to it.

Tripura had set a target of 156 runs for Gujarat, which they gunned down in only 10.2 overs, courtesy of a sensational, record-breaking knock from Urvil.

Fastest hundreds in T20 cricket:

27 balls – Sahil Chauhan – Estonia v Cyprus, 2024

28 balls – Urvil Patel – Gujarat v Tripura, 2024

30 balls – Chris Gayle – Royal Challengers Bangalore v Pune Warriors, 2013

32 balls – Rishabh Pant – Delhi v Himachal Pradesh, 2018

Coincidentally, Urvil had hammered the second-fastest hundred by an Indian in List-A cricket exactly a year ago. In the the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Arunachal Pradesh, he thumped a 41-ball century, which is just behind Yusuf Pathan’s record of a 40-ball ton in 2009/10.

The 26-year-old Urvil was part of the Gujarat Titans (GT) squad in IPL 2023 season when was bought for his base price of INR 30 lakhs. He was released and then went unsold in the IPL 2024 mini auction and IPL 2025 mega auction.

Patel would be hoping that his latest feat would be noticed by the IPL franchises and if needed, he could get a call-up to be a replacement player.
