USA vs CAN: Aaron Jones enters elusive list with 10 sixes in first match of ICC T20 World Cup 2024

USA batter Aaron Jones smoked 10 sixes in his stunning innings of 94* off 40 balls against Canada.

The USA’s Aaron Jones lit up the opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with his jaw-dropping knock of 94* runs off 40 balls against Canada on Saturday night at the Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas. This was the USA’s first-ever appearance at the ICC T20 World Cup and Jones’ memorable innings helped them record their maiden win in the competition.

The USA were given a target of 195, which they scaled down with seven wickets in hand and 14 balls to spare courtesy of a gigantic partnership between Jones and Andries Gous, who hit 65 off 46. The pair recorded a partnership of 131 (58) for the third wicket after the USA were in a tricky position at 42/2 in the seventh over of their innings.

Aaron Jones was simply outstanding with the bat as he clattered 10 sixes in his knock. With these 10 hits over the fence, the 29-year-old joined West Indies legend Chris Gayle in second spot for most sixes in an individual innings in a men’s T20 World Cup.

Gayle and Jones are the only two batters in men’s T20 World Cup history to hit 10 or more sixes in an innings. Gayle has done it twice.

Against England at the 2016 T20 World Cup, the former West Indies opener cracked 11 sixes, which is a record in the competition’s history. Before that, at the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa, Gayle blasted 10 sixes against the hosts. Now, the USA’s Aaron Jones has joined Gayle in second position with 10 sixes against Canada.

The 10 sixes by Jones are the most hit by a USA batter in men’s T20Is. No US batter had hit more than five sixes until now. His 94* is the second-highest score by a USA batter, behind 101 by Steven Taylor against Jersey a couple of years ago.
