Vaibhav Sooryavanshi couldn’t finish the game for India A in super over against Sri Lanka A.

India A had a dramatic Monday in Dambulla. Their match against Sri Lanka A in the Tri-Nation ended in chaos with a physical confrontation involving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ending a remarkable evening.

Sooryavanshi started off well but couldn’t carry that on as he made 21 runs off 14 balls. He launched Gunasekara for a six and three boundaries. It was Arachchige who finally had him caught at point and ended what had been a special little cameo.

His departure had left India A in a spot of bother though. The middle order had crumbled badly and India had found themselves gasping at 143 for 7 at one stage. It looked like a below-par total was on the cards until Suryansh Shedge and Vipraj Nigam walked to the crease together. The two had put on 104 runs for the eighth wicket and completely changed the complexion of the innings.

Shedge has scored 72 off 66 balls. Nigam has also been knocking on the selectors’ door loudly, and his 51 off 49 balls with six boundaries made sure India finished with 265 on the board.

Sri Lanka A had gone about their chase with real intent. Sameera Samarawickrama played a brilliant innings of 93 off 113 balls had nearly stolen the game. India had dragged it back brilliantly in the final over, only for a last-ball run-out to deny them the win and level the scores completely.

Super Over drama in SL-A vs IND-A game

The Super Over was itself mired in controversy before a single ball was bowled. Fading light prompted the umpires to consider abandoning the Super Over altogether which lead to prolonged and heated discussions on the field involving India A captain Tilak Varma and the coaching staff. Officials eventually agreed to proceed.

Sri Lanka A batted first in the Super Over and posted 16 runs. Avishka Fernando struck a massive six before being caught off the final ball, only for the third umpire to rule it a no-ball due to the delivery exceeding waist height. The free hit that followed yielded a single bye.

Sooryavanshi and Shedge were sent out to chase 17. Needing 14 off the final three balls, Sooryavanshi was yorked by Kugathas Mathulan for two runs before pulling a boundary off a leg-side delivery to keep hopes alive. However, a precise wide yorker on the penultimate ball proved too good, and India A ultimately fell short by 7 runs.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi involved in altercation with Sri Lanka A players

What happened next has had people having serious debate on social media. As Sri Lankan players had begun their celebrations, Shedge had found himself in a heated verbal exchange with a few opposition players near the pitch. Sooryavanshi, who had walked across toward his partner had then shoved one Sri Lanka A player firmly in the chest.

Several Sri Lankan players had stepped in quickly and had managed to separate the two sides before things could escalate further.
