Joe Root is currently 3981 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar’s overall test tally.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed veteran English cricketer Joe Root to break legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in test cricket. On July 21, 2024, Root hammered his 32nd test century when England faced the West Indies in the second match of the ongoing series at Trent Bridge.

Root smashed 122 runs in the second innings, which helped the hosts England set a huge target of 385 runs. The hosts dismantled the West Indies batting line-up as they won the match by 241 runs and took a 2-0 lead in the ongoing three-match test series.

During the second test match against the West Indies, veteran England batter Root also surpassed legendary West Indies cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul for smashing most runs in test cricket. Root is now the eighth-highest run-getter in the longest format, whereas Chanderpaul slipped down to ninth place.

Root will become England’s leading run scorer and might overtake Sachin Tendulkar in tests: Michael Vaughan

Following Joe Root’s hundred in the third test, former England captain Vaughan expressed that Root will become England’s leading run-getter in the coming months, and he might overtake Sachin Tendulkar, who is the highest run-scorer in tests.

“Joe Root will become England’s leading run-scorer in the next few months and is so special that he really could overtake Sachin Tendulkar eventually. With the bat generally they did not look reckless like they have in the past. They are scoring quickly, but it doesn’t look like their egos are taking over. They are just playing with good sense,” Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

Vaughan further added that he loved that Root kept his reverse-scoop in the locker until England passed the 100-run lead during the second test match against the West Indies.

“As the rock, Root is obviously key to that, and I love that he kept the reverse-scoop in the locker until he was past 100 and England’s lead was massive,” Vaughan added.

After the end of the second test match against the West Indies, Root now stands at 11940 runs in 142 matches at an average of 49.95. The veteran cricketer has also smashed 32 centuries and 62 half centuries till now.

Currently, Root is England’s second-highest run scorer in test cricket. Ahead of him is the legendary Alastair Cook, who has amassed 12472 runs in 161 matches. Tendulkar with 15921 runs in 200 matches at an average of 53.78 is the highest run-scorer in test cricket.
