Ravi Ashwin retired mid-way through the BGT 2024-25.
Former India off-spinner Ravi Ashwin received a grand welcome at his Chennai residence as he flew back from home Australia after announcing his retirement from international cricket.
Less than 24 hours since he officially announced his retirement following the conclusion of the third test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy BGT 2024-25 in Brisbane, Ashwin was at his home in Chennai, where he received a hero’s welcome with traditional music, garlands, and cheers as several people gathered at his residence on Friday morning.
Ashwin’s father, Ravichandran, was the first one to embrace him in a warm hug. The cricketer then hugged his mother, Chitra, who was in tears, overwhelmed by the emotions.
There were other society members and Ashwin’s friends. They clicked photos and had autographs signed from India’s second-most successful test and international bowler of all time.

Ashwin picked up 537 wickets in test cricket, the second-most for India, behind only Anil Kumble, at an average of 24. He bagged 37 five-wicket hauls, the joint second-most in the world. He finished his India career with 765 wickets, against only behind Kumble.
The Tamil Nadu cricketer had made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2010 and test debut in 2011. India’s 12-year-long dominance at home was on the back of Ashwin’s astonishing bowling in home conditions.
In addition, he also scored six test centuries and over 3500 runs in the longest format, making him one of the greatest match-winner of all time.
In his retirement speech in the dressing room, Ashwin said, “I don’t know how to go about this. Honestly, it is easier to speak in the team huddle. Even though I’m not exhibiting it, it is truly a very emotional moment for me.
