Virat Kohli is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who is the highest run-getter in ODIs with 8426 runs in 463 matches.

India batter Virat Kohli became the second-highest run-getter in ODI cricket after his brilliant knock in the recent third ODI against Australia. This match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on October 25, 2025.

Australia won the toss and chose to bat first, given they already had pocketed the ODI series by winning the first two games in Perth and Adelaide. India made two changes, bringing in Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Yadav for Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Mitchell Marsh made 41 and Matt Renshaw made 56 as Australia posted 236 in 46.4 overs. At one point in time, the Kangaroos were set on a score of 280 or more. But some brilliant bowling by spinners in the middle overs choked the Aussie batters. Harshit Rana took 4/39, while Washington Sundar picked two wickets for India.

India needed a win to avoid a whitewash, and their batters needed to score, which they did. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opened the innings and added 69 runs for the first wicket. Hazlewood dismissed Shubman Gill for 24 runs, leading to Virat Kohli entering the SCG to a huge ovation.

He was ecstatic after scoring his first run, while Rohit Sharma (121*) kept hammering the Australian bowlers to all parts of the SCG ground. Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant ton off 105 balls, while Virat Kohli (74*) scored his first fifty in this series off 56 balls, having bagged two back to back ducks in the last two games.

Thanks to this knock, Virat Kohli became the second-highest run-getter in the history of ODI cricket. He went past Kumar Sangakkara, and only Sachin Tendulkar remains ahead of Kohli.

In just 305 games, Kohli has amassed ODI runs with a strike rate of 93 and an average of nearly 58. Among the top 10 batsmen with the most ODI runs, the former captain of India is the only one with an average of 50 or higher.
