After poor show against Bangladesh, Virat Kohli named in Delhi Ranji Trophy probables

Virat Kohli last played in the Ranji Trophy in 2012-13 season.

Modern-day legend Virat Kohli has been named in Delhi’s probables for the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season on September 24.

This comes after Kohli had a poor outing with the bat against Bangladesh in the opening test match in Chennai. The right-handed batter scored just six runs in the first innings. In the second innings Kohli made 17 runs off 37 balls.

This is the first time since 2018 that Kohli has been named in Delhi’s probables for Ranji Trophy. Kohli’s last appearance in the elite domestic tournament was in the 2012-13 season against Uttar Pradesh. Kohli’s potential return could boost Delhi’s chances to win the elite Ranji Trophy.

Apart from Kohli, Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant has also been included in Delhi’s Ranji Trophy probables list for the upcoming season. Recently, Pant was seen playing in the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 before being released to play for India in the ongoing two-match test series against Bangladesh.

The inclusion of both superstars in Delhi’s probable comes after BCCI’s policy of bringing back established cricketers into the domestic cricket. It is understood that Kohli and Pant might miss some of the Ranji Trophy matches due to their busy international schedule.

84 played named in Delhi’s probable for Ranji Trophy 2024 season

As per the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA)’s release, the probables list includes 84 players. Surprisingly, veteran seamer Ishant Sharma has been left out of the probables list.

After having performing well in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) T20 tournament, youngsters Ayush Badoni and Priyansh Arya have been named in the Delhi’s probables list for the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season.

The DDCA release further stated that a fitness test of players will take place on 26th September. Players who are on international duty have been exempted from the fitness test.

This means Kohli and Pant will not be part of the fitness test as the Indian superstars will play the second test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur, starting from September 27.

“The committee has selected the following probables for consideration in the Delhi Men’s Senior Squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy tournament in the 2024-25 domestic season. A fitness test for the selected players will take place on 26th September 2024, with the venue details to be communicated by the team manager,” DDCA release said.

“Players currently on international duty are exempt from this fitness test. Furthermore, players under 23 years of age, if not selected for the Ranji Trophy squad, will be permitted to attend trials for the Under-23 category. The selectors will have the final say on the placement of players in the respective categories,” the statement added.
