Virat Kohli becomes 3rd batsman after Shikhar Dhawan and Jos Buttler to score consecutive centuries in the IPL
Another IPL record for Virat Kohli's illustrious career.
One of the greatest in IPL, records keep following Virat Kohli like a shadow. In a must-win game for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against Gujarat Titans (GT), Kohli brought his A-game to score a century and break a few records. He became only the third batter in the history of IPL to score back-to-back centuries in the IPL after Shikhar Dhawan and Jos Buttler. In RCB's previous game against SRH, Kohli broke his century drought in IPL by plundering 100 runs off just 63 balls while chasing. This time against GT while batting first, he scored his consecutive century with the final score of 101*(61).
The first player to achieve the feat to hit consecutive centuries was Shikhar Dhawan back in 2020 when he was playing for the Delhi Capitals. He scored his two back-to-back centuries against CSK and PBKS. After him, Jos Buttler got added to the list when he struck two centuries on the bounce against KKR and DC in IPL 2022.
Also, Virat Kohli is now leading the charts of most centuries in IPL with 7 to his name. In the previous game against SRH, he equaled the most centuries record with his former teammate, Chris Gayle. Kohli at his very best, took the charge to single-handedly take his team's total to 197 runs to ensure that they have enough runs to fight for the spot of the playoffs.
MI and RCB were potentially the teams most likely to qualify for the playoffs as the fourth berth remained open. After MI's win over SRH in the afternoon game, RCB's game became a virtual quarterfinal for the RCB clan. RCB need to ensure two things - First, they win the game and second, they win it by a decent margin to override MI's NRR.
I think I am playing my best T20 cricket again - Virat Kohli
The world was left in awe of Virat Kohli after he scored yet another century to keep his team's playoff hopes alive. Kohli smashed an unbeaten 101 off 61 balls at a strike rate of 165.67, including 13 boundaries and a six during his power-packed knock. He stayed till the end as Bangalore posted 197/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Following his rendition of greatness, Kohli said, "I felt great. Lot of people think that my T20 cricket is declining, I don't feel like that at all. I think I am playing my best T20 cricket again. I'm just enjoying myself. This is how I play T20 cricket, I look to hit gaps, hit a lot of boundaries and then the big ones towards the end if the situation allows me to."
"You have to read situations and rise up to the occasion when the situation demands. I feel really good with my game at the moment and how I'm batting" he added.
