Virat Kohli was dismissed for five runs in the first innings.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 got underway on Friday in a thrilling fashion. Opting to bat first on a green Perth wicket, India started poorly losing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal inside first 11 overs.

Mitchell Starc troubled the Indian batting unit with his disciplined bowling display. Things soon turned bad to worse for India with the scorecard reading 73/6. Debutant Nitish Reddy top-scored for the visitors playing a gritty 41-run knock to help the team put 150 runs on the board.

Defending their small first innings score, the Indian team started strongly with captain Jasprit Bumrah dismissing Australia’s debutant and opener Nathan McSweeney for the score of just 10 runs.

A major moment in the game came in the third over of Australia’s innings when Virat Kohli dropped Marnus Labuschagne for a duck. Bowling over the wicket, Jasprit Bumrah consistently tested Marnus Labuschagne with a series of probing out-swingers.

On the fifth delivery of the over, Bumrah produced a beauty—angling in before nipping away just enough to kiss the outside edge of Labuschagne’s bat. The ball flew towards the slip cordon at a comfortable height, but Virat Kohli, standing at the second slip, dropped what should have been a regulation catch.

Meanwhile, at the time of writing, Australia have lost four wickets with Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Steve Smith and Travis Head all back to the pavilion.

Captain Jasprit Bumrah is leading India’s charge with three wickets to his name. India will look to take a few more wickets before today’s end of play. Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh are at the crease for the hosts.
