JUST IN: Virat Kohli shatters Sachin Tendulkar's record; becomes fastest to 15000 ODI runs

Virat Kohli has scored the second-highest runs in ODI history.

India are currently facing the West Indies in the first match of their three-match ODI series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Shubman Gill won the toss and decided to bowl first.

John Campbell and Justin Greaves gave the Caribbean side a strong start, as the opening partnership accumulated 135 runs. Campbell scored 62 runs, and Greaves completed a spectacular century; however, both were eventually dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav. The Chinaman took four wickets while Prasidh Krishna dismissed two batters.

A half-century by Amir Jangoo helped the West Indies put up a target of 296 for India. Home fans were keen to watch cricket icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the start of the game, and they arrived to bat in the second innings.

Sharma lost his wicket after scoring only 32 runs. Indian skipper Subhman Gill put up a spectacle for his batting prowess by scoring 110 runs and hitting 13 fours and a six. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli created a new record, leaving cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar behind.

Virat Kohli becomes the fastest player to score 15000 runs in ODI cricket

With his 40-ball half-century against the West Indies, Virat Kohli became the second player to score 15000 runs in ODI cricket after Sachin Tendulkar, who has racked up more than 18000 runs.

However, the former Indian team captain has become the fastest player ever to complete 15,000 runs in ODI cricket. He completed the milestone in 303 innings, while Sachin Tendulkar took a total of 377 innings for the same.

The 37-year-old is also the player with the most centuries in ODI cricket. Kohli is also the only active batter in the top five all-time list, which also includes the likes of cricket icons such as Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, and Sanath Jayasuriya.

Rohit Sharma is seventh on the list with 11927 runs. Nevertheless, the 39-year-old will have the opportunity to become only the third Indian batter to score 1200 ODI runs and overall seventh.
