Virat Kohli won player of the tournament in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

After dominating in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, India suffered a heart-breaking defeat in the final against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The performance of the team suffered a major hit, and it resulted in yet another loss for India in an ICC knockout game. After losing the toss, India batted first and were dismissed for just 240 runs.

A number of players couldn't make significant contributions. Rohit Sharma made 47 runs at the top. Virat Kohli looked good, smashed yet another half-century, and made 54 runs. KL Rahul made a rusty 60. But none of them could convert it into a big one, which resulted in a poor batting display by the hosts. Eventually, it was not even challenging for Indian bowlers to fight for.

It was an emotional night for team India and the fans. India were the favourites to lift the trophy heading into the finals, but it fell apart when it required it the most. Nothing worked in their favour in all three departments, which ended up breaking the hopes of billions of fans across the world. Indian players were left with teary eyes, and all their dreams were shattered.

After the game, players from both sides shook hands, and Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell, who are teammates in Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore, shared a hug, and Virat gifted Maxwell his signed Indian jersey.

In reply to India's 240, Australia lost some early wickets and were at 47/3 in 7 overs. But then, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne added a big partnership to take Australia home. Head made 137 off 120 balls and became the 7th player to register a hundred in the ICC Cricket World Cup final. He also won the man of the match award, while Labuschagne scored an unbeaten half-century.
