Virat Kohli or Yashasvi Jaiswal? Aaron Finch picks Rohit Sharma's opening partner at ICC T20 World Cup 2024
The 2021 T20 World Cup-winning captain gave his opinion on the Virat Kohli vs Yashasvi Jaiswal debate.
The Indian team management, headed by captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid, has left the fans and experts puzzled with their batting order in the warm-up match against Bangladesh ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Three Indian players didn’t participate in the warm-up fixture; two of them were batters Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal. It was understandable that because Kohli had arrived only a day before the match, he was rested from the action in New York. But, Jaiswal not getting to bat in the warm-up match has raised speculation about whether he would open at the tournament.
Known for his aggressive approach, Jaiswal had a lukewarm Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, where he managed only two scores of fifty or more. Sanju Samson opened alongside Sharma and Rishabh Pant came in at No. 3; the left-hander hit a fifty while Samson managed only one run.
Kohli had a thunderous IPL 2024 season as an opener, in which he amassed more than 700 runs. If India decide to open with Kohli by dropping Jaiswal, they can accommodate Shivam Dube in the middle-order.
Everyone knows that Virat Kohli is going to bat long: Aaron Finch
Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch believes Kohli is the perfect batter for pitches on which 180 is a winning total. Finch also pointed at Jaiswal’s aggressive instinct as an opener and backed the young left-hander to open along with Sharma.
Speaking on The Grade Cricketer podcast, Finch stated, “Say it is a 180-style tournament, then India have got a very good side for it. (Kohli) can bat long into the innings and still strike at 150.”
He added, “Jaiswal is gun, he tees off with Rohit Sharma up top, they will go as hard as they can. Once Virat then gets in, then the other ones continue to go really hard because everyone knows that he is going to bat long.”
India will take on Ireland for their first group match on June 5 in New York.
