Virat Kohli retired from test cricket right before India’s test tour of England.
Virat Kohli, the former captain of India, was overjoyed when his country defeated England by 336 runs in the second test of the ongoing five-match series. India’s win in the game was their first test win at Edgbaston, Birmingham in nine clashes.
India amassed a commanding 587 in the first innings after being put in to bat, led by Shubman Gill, who scored a career-high 269, adorned with 30 boundaries and three sixes. With their half-century contributions, Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal provided him with strong backing.
A huge 303-run partnership between Jamie Smith (184) and Harry Brook (158) helped England reply with 407 runs. But six of their batsmen were down for ducks, giving India a commanding 180-run lead.
Gill put on another batting display in India’s second innings, scoring 161. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant played fluid strokes to bring the total to 427/6 declared, giving England a massive 608 to win. Jadeja added another fifty.

By the conclusion of day four, Akash Deep had reduced England to 72/4 after destroying their top order by dismissing Ben Duckett and Joe Root. On day five, he continued to dominate, dismissing Ollie Pope and Harry Brook. Ben Stokes (33), Brydon Carse (38), and Jamie Smith (88) put up a fight, but England were bowled out for 271.
India won the match handily thanks to Akash Deep’s 10-wicket match haul and 6/99 in the second innings.
After the win, several former Indian cricketers took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared their reactions to the win. And former India test captain Virat Kohli was one of them.
Kohli retired from test cricket just before India named test squad for the England tour in a shocking move. He played 123 tests, scoring 9230 runs with 30 centuries to his name.
However, he was ecstatic to see the Indian team doing so well under the new captain, Shubman Gill, especially after losing the first test in Leeds. He praised the batters, bowlers, and Gill for their performance.
“Great victory for India at Edgbaston. Fearless and kept pushing England to the wall. Brilliantly led by Shubhman with the bat and in the field and impactful performances from everyone.
