Virat Kohli reveals why he decided to retire from T20Is after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Virat Kohli retired from T20Is after winning the Player of the Match award in T20 World Cup 2024 final which India won.
Virat Kohli has revealed why he announced his decision to retire from T20 Internationals after India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. India defeated South Africa in the final to lift their first ICC trophy since 2013, and Virat Kohli was named the Player of the Match in the final for his match-winning fifty.
Just behind Rohit Sharma, Kohli finished his T20I career as India’s second-highest run scorer in the format. At a strike rate of 137.04 and an average of 48.69, he had amassed 4188 runs.
Virat Kohli is one of the biggest names in world cricket, and his decision to say goodbye to one of the most popular formats of the game sent shockwaves across the cricketing community. Not only did Kohli retire, but captain Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also followed Kohli’s suit and announced their retirements from T20Is.
“I do not think things have changed for me.” – Virat Kohli
In a podcast posted by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Virat Kohli opened up about his decision to retire from the T20Is.
“I do not think things have changed for me in any way. The decision (to leave T20Is) was taken purely understanding that there is a new set of players who are more than ready, and they need time; they need a 2-year cycle to evolve, handle pressure, play in different parts of the world, and play enough games to the point where when the World Cup comes, they feel like they are ready,” Virat Kohli told Mayanti Langer on RCB podcast.
Virat’s performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is still excellent despite his retirement from T20Is. He has scored 443 runs at an average of 63.28 in 10 games, making him the third-leading run scorer in the IPL 2025.
He also talked about his devotion to RCB and the love he has received from the supporters.
“The love that I have received from the fans, I do not think any silverware or any trophy can come close to that,” he added.
Virat Kohli’s numbers in the Indian Premier League

In addition, Kohli led RCB to the IPL 2016 finals and captained the team from 2013 until 2021. During 2016 season, Kohli amassed a record 973 runs in 16 games and hit four centuries.
