VVS Laxman recently travelled with Team India as interim head coach for Zimbabwe T20Is.
India’s schedule for the next few months is completely packed, featuring several major international assignments. The Asian Games 2026 is one of them, where India will compete for the gold medal.
India won the gold medal in the last edition as well. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 24. It is a 10-team tournament, which will host 14 T20I matches, including the final on October 3. All these matches will be played at Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin.
India have announced a strong squad led by Shreyas Iyer. Many star players are part of the squad, including Jasprit Bumrah. However, his availability will depend on his fitness.
India are considered the strongest contender to win gold. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir will not travel with the Indian team for the tournament.

Former Indian star and Director of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy, VVS Laxman is set to take over as the head coach of Team India for the upcoming Asian Games 2026.
Along with Laxman, the coaching staff will include Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Subhadeep Ghosh, while Maroof Fajandar will lead the team’s support staff at the Asian Games 2026.
Laxman will be the interim head coach, as India will also have a multi-format series against West Indies during that period. Hence, Regular head coach Gautam Gambhir will remain with the senior team for the home ODI series.
The tour will take place between September 27 and October 17, featuring five T20Is and three ODIs. India will play their first match at the Asian Games 2026 on September 28 (Monday) in the second quarter-final.
The Men in Blue qualified directly for the knockouts as they are the No. 1-ranked T20I team. Apart from India, the other teams to qualify directly for the quarter-finals are Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
