VVS Laxman to coach India on Zimbabwe tour; New coach to take over from Sri Lanka tour

VVS Laxman will be India’s interim coach on the Zimbabwe tour this month.
The BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the new head coach of the Indian cricket team will take charge of the side from the Sri Lanka tour later this month. Before that, a young Indian team led by Shubman Gill will tour Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series, starting July 6.
VVS Laxman will be India’s interim coach for this Zimbabwe tour before the new coach takes over the full-time duties with the tour of Sri Lanka, starting July 27.
With the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, the Indian men’s cricket team will be ushered into a new era of T20Is from the Zimbabwe tour.
This reboot also includes a new coaching setup with a new head coach at the helm as Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which India won by defeating South Africa in the final by seven runs and clinching their second T20 world title. The Men In Blue also ended their decade-long wait for an ICC silverware.
NCA head VVS Laxman to travel to Zimbabwe as interim coach; Gambhir, WV Raman are two shortlisted candidates for new coach’s position
The BCCI had already confirmed that VVS Laxman, who is the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) will tour Zimbabwe in the capacity of a temporary coach. The new head coach will take over the role from the Sri Lanka tour, which will start on July 27.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, former India batsman Gautam Gambhir is the front-runner to grab the vacant role, while former women’s team coach WV Raman is also shortlisted.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) had conducted interviews for the post last month.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said, “Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but a new coach will join from the Sri Lanka series.”
