The BCCI could hand VVS Laxman a significant new responsibility in September.

VVS Laxman has been one of the most influential Indian cricketers in the history of the game. He played 220 international matches and scored over 10,000 runs across formats. He was once one of the backbones of the Indian Test team and scored 8,781 runs in 134 Test matches.

After his retirement, he remained very influential in Indian cricket and continued to work with the country’s young cricketers.

His contribution to Indian cricket extended when he took on several key responsibilities within the BCCI. Through his work with the National Cricket Academy (now known as the BCCI Centre of Excellence), Laxman has played a pivotal role in the transformation of Indian cricket.

He is the head of the CoE, emphasising workload tracking and player development over rehabilitation. The former Indian star has also been involved in coaching and mentoring roles. However, there are now rumours that VVS Laxman could take on a major role within Indian cricket in September.

In this context, let’s look at the ongoing reports regarding Laxman’s new major role in Indian cricket.

According to Indian journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, VVS Laxman is set to get a very big role in Indian cricket in September. Speaking on a podcast, Sardesai mentioned that a parliamentary reporter had told him about the matter.

He said, “I was told by one of my parliamentary reporters to be prepared that VVS Laxman is getting a very big assignment in Indian cricket in September. He is certainly the head of the Centre of Excellence, but he is now being groomed for a big task in Indian cricket. I don’t know what it is. It could be chairman of selectors or white-ball coach. There are many speculations. But someone well-known has told our reporters in Parliament about this.”

With the ODI World Cup 2027 a year away, it is highly unlikely that the Indian head coach will be changed. However, there are many positions VVS Laxman can serve in. By becoming the chairman of the selection committee, he can play a highly influential role in players’ selection for the senior team.
