After Wasim Akram’s refusal, PCB approached Waqar Younis, who has accepted the terms.
In a significant development regarding Pakistan cricket, Waqar Younis is set to be the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or advisor to the chairman after Wasim Akram rejected the offer from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), according to a report in the Cricket Pakistan website.
It is to be noted that new PCB constitution does not currently include the position of CEO. However, the board could make amendments to fit in Waqar in his new role, which could also be as the Adviser for Cricket Affairs to the PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi.
Naqvi, who also serves as the Federal Minister of Interior, has faced severe criticism for not dedicating sufficient time to cricket. Hence, he decided to rope in a former cricketer as the CEO or Adviser for Cricket Affairs for which the two legendary pacers were contacted.
Wasim Akram refused to take up the role, PCB then approached Waqar
According to the latest reports in Pakistan media, the PCB first approached Wasim Akram and offered the role of CEO or advisor to the chairman, but he turned down the offer due to personal reasons. The role required him to be in Lahore full-time to oversee all cricket affairs of the PCB.
However, since Akram is a regular visitor to Australia to meet his family, and due to his other personal commitments, the former left-arm speedster rejected the offer.
Following Akram’s refusal, PCB then approached Waqar Younis, whose family also resides in Australia. However, Waqar has reportedly accepted the job and is ready to relocate to Lahore. Waqar has previously been associated with the PCB and with the Pakistan cricket team in coaching roles.
Naqvi reportedly talked with both Akram and Waqar. Akram has assured the chairman that he would keep himself available to support Pakistan cricket if and when needed.
