Watch: Ajinkya Rahane's witty jibe when asked about India comeback at an age of 35

Ajinkya Rahane was reappointed as India's Test vice-captain for the West Indies Tests.

Team India had brilliant performances throughout the World Test Championship 2021–23. But they couldn't end it well and lost the second consecutive WTC final, this time against Australia. Though India had some positives from that game to take away. One of the biggest pluses was the comeback of veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane. The 35-year-old made his comeback to the team after 20 months and ended the game as India's top scorer.

Rahane played his previous game for India in South Africa in January 2022. But due to a string of low scores and youngsters doing well, Rahane was stripped of the vice-captaincy and later lost his place in the team. But after doing well at the domestic level, and a spectacular season in the Indian Premier League with the Chennai Super Kings helped him regain his spot in the team.

Ajinkya Rahane made his Test comeback for India in WTC Final 2023 after a 20-month gap

A couple of months ago, it looked like the end of the road for the 35-year-old. However, his consistent performance helped him get his place back on the team. Now, he will assist Rohit Sharma in the upcoming two-match test series against the West Indies, starting on July 12.

In a press conference ahead of the first test on Wednesday, Ajinkya Rahane was asked about his comeback at the age of 35. Rahane had a witty response to that. He said, "Is age mein matlab? Main abhi bhi young hoon yaar (At this age means? I am still young). There is still a lot of cricket left in me. Definitely, the IPL season was pretty good and I had a very good domestic season as well."

India's vice-captain also stated that he is feeling pretty good about his batting form and has worked in certain areas for more improvement. He said that he is focusing on one match at a time and doesn't want to think too much. When asked about his reappointment as vice-captain, he said that he is used to this role, having done it for 4-5 years, and is really happy to get the same responsibility. Notably, after he was dropped from India's test team, Rahane had some good performances at the domestic level.

But his breakthrough performance came with CSK. Ajinkya Rahane also said that CSK gave him freedom, which helped him. Ajinkya Rahane said, "Nothing has changed. In the IPL, CSK gave me freedom. CSK told me to play with freedom and play my natural game. I have always believed that the role the team has given me, I have to fulfill that. Here, whatever role Rohit Sharma gives me, I will try to fulfill that."
