Faf du Plessis smashed 54 runs during the match against CSK on May 18.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) suffered a huge blow in their must-win Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 18. Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis, who was leading the side with a well-made 54, was run out in an unfortunate way.

After being asked to bat first, Bengaluru had a perfect start with the bat as Virat Kohli and skipper Faf smashed 30 runs in the first three overs. However, rain interrupted the play, and the match was held for a few minutes.

Soon, after the rain break, Chennai’s spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana and Mitchell Santner started to get spin from the first delivery as the defending champions started to restrict both the Bengaluru openers.

However, Kohli took the aggressive route as he hammered a 29-ball 47 before getting dismissed by Santner in the 10th over. After Kohli’s dismissal, RCB skipper du Plessis continued to attack the Super Kings bowlers along with Rajat Patidar. Du Plessis reached the crucial half-century in the 12th over.

Faf du Plessis innings end in an unfortunate way

The unfortunate incident happened during the 13th over of the first innings, when CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad brought Santner into the attack to bowl his final over of his spell.

On the last ball of the over Rajat Patidar, who was on the strike, hit a floaty delivery straight towards the Santner. However, the ball took a slight deflection of the bowler’s hand and hit the stumps. Umpires went upstairs to check whether skipper Faf du Plessis is out of the crease or not.

The third umpire took several looks to verify whether Santner got a touch on the ball or not. However, he was unsure, and then he used the Ultra Edge technology. The Ultra Edge showed that CSK bowler Santner did get a small touch as a spike was seen on the technology.

After confirming it, the third umpire gave the marching orders to RCB skipper du Plessis. Du Plessis was stunned by the decision, while Santner and CSK celebrated the crucial wicket.

Du Plessis went after amassing well-made 54 runs in 39 deliveries along with three fours and three sixes. While Santner finished his spell with 1/23 in four overs.
