Matthew Wade was angry at Nitin Menon for not giving a dead ball during the AUS vs ENG clash.

Australia keeper-batter Matthew Wade has reportedly been reprimanded by the ICC for showing dissent at a decision of umpire Nitin Menon during Australia’s encounter against England in match number 17 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

On Saturday, Australia thumped England by 36 runs at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

Wade contributed 17 unbeaten runs in 10 balls, which included three fours. It helped Australia cross the 200-run mark, something no team had done in the tournament until then. During the 18th over of Australia’s innings, Wade and Menon had a heated altercation which involved the umpire shooing away the batsman who was charging towards him.

On the third ball of the 18th over, bowled by leg-spinner Adil Rashid, Wade moved away from the stumps just before Rashid delivered the ball. The reasoning Wade’s teammates have given is that the music on the ground was still on when Rashid started his run-up.

However, Wade tapped the ball – that means he played the ball instead of leaving it completely. Menon didn’t give it a dead ball which incensed Wade. Later, England captain Jos Buttler agreed with Menon, saying that Wade had played the ball and not left it, making it a legal delivery.

The left-hander was angry at the umpire and started to charge toward him to have a chat. However, Menon was having none of it and shooed Wade away, telling him to continue batting and asserting that his decision was final. A ball later, when Wade went to the non-striker’s end, he talked with Menon about his call.

According to a report in NewsCorp, the Aussie keeper has been reprimanded by the ICC for protesting the umpire’s decision.

Article 20.4.2.5 of the Laws of Cricket states that the umpire can signal a dead ball if “the striker is not ready for the delivery of the ball and, if the ball is delivered, makes no attempt to play it”. Had Wade left the ball, it might have been given a dead ball.
