Watch: Discarded Indian star Shikhar Dhawan resumes training ahead of IPL 2024

Shikhar Dhawan last played for India in December 2022 in an ODI against Bangladesh.

Shikhar Dhawan, who has found himself out of plans of BCCI selectors for the Indian team, has returned to the nets to prepare for the upcoming IPL 2024 edition next year. Dhawan was retained by his IPL franchise, Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

Shikhar Dhawan continued to be one of the league’s most consistent scorers after joining the Punjab Kings in 2022, scoring 460 runs in 14 matches at an average of 38.33 and a strike rate of 122.67 in the IPL that year.

The PBKS team management gave him the captaincy for the 2023 season, although he only played 11 matches, he scored 373 runs at an average of 41.44 and striking at a strike rate of 142.91. He had to sit out a few games after suffering a leg injury during the IPL 2023.

Punjab Kings, led by Shikhar Dhawan, were placed seventh in the IPL 2023 standings, ahead of Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, despite winning only six of 14 matches.

On December 11, he posted a video to his official Instagram account showing followers a taste of his preparation for the PBKS’s IPL 2024 season. Shikhar Dhawan was seen stretching with his cricket gear on before taking guard to play defensive strokes, which were followed by attacking strokes.

He quoted his post, “Returning to the cricket pitch, where each shot feels like a reunion with an old friend.”

PBKS have retained most of their squad ahead of the IPL 2024 auction with them only releasing Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Mohit Rathee, Baltej Dhanda, Shahrukh Khan, Matt Short, Raj Angad Bawa. They will have 29.1 crores purse in the auction.
