Sri Lanka still have not forgotten Angelo Mathewsâ timed out dismissal in the CWC 2023.
Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the T20I series against Bangladesh, clinching the final match by 28 runs and the series 2-1. But the celebrations after the win went beyond the usual trophy presentation. In a playful dig at Bangladesh, the Sri Lankan team performed a unique âtimed outâ celebration while posing with the trophy.
This gesture refers back to a controversial incident during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 match between the two sides. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed-out dismissal of Sri Lankaâs Angelo Mathews when his helmet strap came loose while coming out to bat. The appeal was upheld, causing much debate and lingering tension between the teams.
Sri Lankaâs post-series celebration, with all players mimicking checking an imaginary watch on their wrists, was a clear reference to that ODI World Cup 2023 incident. The image, shared on Sri Lanka Cricketâs official âXâ handle (formerly Twitter), quickly went viral, sparking discussions and amusement among cricket fans.
This playful act adds another layer of rivalry between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. While some might see it as a cheeky jab, others view it as a clever response to a past grievance.

Nuwan Thushara becomes fifth Sri Lankan bowler to claim a hat-trick in Menâs T20I
Sri Lanka secured a thrilling 2-1 series victory over Bangladesh in the recently concluded three-match T20I series, and a significant share of the credit goes to young fast bowler Nuwan Thushara. The young speedster emerged as the hero in the series decider, taking a spectacular hat-trick that dismantled Bangladeshâs batting order and put Sri Lanka firmly in control.
His first victim was the veteran batter Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was got bowled by a stunning delivery. The very next ball saw Thushara produce a beauty, swinging the ball away to clip the top of Towhid Hridoyâs off-stump. Completing his dream hat-trick, Thushara then got the experienced Mahmudullah out LBW with a delivery that nipped away after pitching in line.
This sensational bowling display not only dented Bangladeshâs momentum but also saw Thushara claim his maiden five-wicket haul in T20I cricket. His outstanding four-over spell proved to be match-winning as Sri Lanka comfortably defended their total.
