Virat Kohli came in to bat after early loss of opener Rohit Sharma against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

Indian batter Virat Kohli lived a charmed life when he arrived at the crease in the ongoing India vs. Sri Lanka ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match being played in Mumbai on November 2, 2023. He received lifelines three times in the initial period as Sri Lankan bowlers tested him.

India came into this match having won the last six of their CWC 2023 matches and with 12 points to their name. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have 4 points from 6 games and are on the verge of elimination from the race for semi-finals.

Kusal Mendis got lucky and won the toss. He chose to bowl first in Mumbai, despite the venue churning out huge scores when teams batted first. Sri Lanka made one change as leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha replaced out-of-form Dhananjaya de Silva in the XI. India came into the game with an unchanged side.

Rohit Sharma started well by hitting Dilshan Madushanka for a four on the very first ball of the first over. But then Madushanka pegged his off-stump back with a brilliant slower ball, sending back the Indian captain for 4 runs in front of his home crowd.

Virat Kohli rides his luck in the initial period at crease against Sri Lanka

In walked Virat Kohli and the crowd made a deafening noise. However, he began his charmed life at the crease from the first ball itself. He flicked the first ball on his pads towards fine leg, where the ball fell just short of the fielder Dimuth Karunaratne, who was stationed for this reason.

He was then tested by Sri Lankan bowlers, especially Dushmantha Chameera. He first bowled a brilliant in-swinger, which took the inside edge of Kohli’s bat and fell just short of the diving keeper Mendis.

Another in-swinger against got the inside edge of Kohli’s bat, but the ball ricocheted straight into his bats, instead of the bat. However, the best example of luck favoring Kohli came in the 6th over.

Dushmantha Chameera got Virat Kohli to play a false shot and induced a leading edge. Chameera then put his left hand out for the return catch and juggled the ball twice before it fell to the ground.
